A central focus of Lilo Mangelsdorff and Sabine Stange’s photographic work is visual discovery. Often, it is everyday objects—visible to everyone—that draw the two artists into their creative processes. Through the lens of the camera, these objects are isolated from their surroundings and—shaped by light and shadow—take on a new, poetic expressiveness. In their aesthetic exploration of light and shadow, reflections, and color nuances—as well as the passage of time and facets of color that become visible within the image—impressions captured spontaneously and intuitively often reveal themselves, as they take shape into images, to be more complex, multi-layered, and translucent than they appeared at first glance.
